Safety
The deepest defensive player, the last line of defense against long passes.
The safety plays farther from the line of scrimmage than any other defender, with the main job of preventing deep passes and back-breaking touchdowns. From that vantage point, they see the whole field and often call out defensive adjustments to the rest of the unit.
There are generally two types: the free safety, faster and geared toward pass coverage, and the strong safety, more physical and involved in stopping runs near the line of scrimmage. Modern teams increasingly use versatile safeties who can play either role depending on the situation.
One possible mix-up: "safety" is also the name of a scoring play worth two points, awarded when the offense is tackled in its own end zone. The two meanings are completely unrelated despite sharing the word.
